Jazz has never been Marc Ribot’s main thing, but that’s mainly because Ribot doesn’t have a main thing. Since appearing on the NYC scene in the ‘80s, the guitarist has collaborated with an astonishingly enormous and diverse list of artists ranging from Elvis Costello to Tom Waits, John Zorn and hundreds of others. While he’s also worked with many jazz artists, and has led his own jazz bands, it wasn’t until 2012 that he headlined at New York’s venerable Village Vanguard jazz mecca. With one of his regular groups, featuring veteran bassist Henry Grimes and the versatile drummer Chad Taylor, Ribot alternately shreds and plays tenderly, tossing off one surprise after the next. A pair of Coltrane tunes bookends the set and there are two by the late saxist Albert Ayler, but Ribot and his mates are equally effective on minimalist readings of the standards “I’m Confessin’ (That I Love You)” and “Old Man River.”
