Snappy fusion—of the speedy, quick-stop, jazz-tinted variety—is the main course on drummer Jeff Sipe’s first disc with his new trio. Opening track “Trumpets” offers multicolor unison lines and pulverizing funk friction, while the more laid-back “Alberta” gains from guitarist Mike Seal’s Americana-tinged, finger-style tones and bassist Taylor Lee’s rubbery, six-string curlicues. There are plenty of original compositions to like here, including the meditative, slow-churning ballad “April,” which hints at early Metheny, the frantic “Lightning Man,” the folk-edged “Home Town,” and the slamming, noisy “Happy Evil Happy.” For good measure, the trio takes on John Coltrane with a hyperactive version of “Naima,” opening up into Seal’s most audacious solo and a slinky, deep-blues version of Hank Williams’ classic “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry.”
