Ray LaMontagne and My Morning Jacket, Blue Hills Bank Pavilion, Boston, MA- 6/26

Although Jim James produced Ray LaMontagne’s new album Ouroboros, the members of My Morning Jacket do not appear on it. However, as these four musicians joined LaMontagne on stage in Boston, it was clear they had absorbed it, nailing the harmonies and producing the rich tapestry of sounds that define this wondrous new headphones record.

Before that, however, LaMontagne emerged by himself for a brief opening set that included three songs from his debut album, 2004’s Trouble. His ethereal vocals echoed throughout the venue on “Burn,” “Jolene” and “Trouble.”

Then it was time for the main event, as LaMontage welcomed MMJ’s Tom Blankenship (bass), Carl Broemel (guitar), Patrick Hallahan (drums) and Bo Koster (keys). They then proceeded to deliver an inspired version of LaMontagne’s new psychedelic classic Ouroboros. The quintet delivered a masterful interpretation of the album, painting in all the colors while also adding some new hues. From the spare opening “Homecoming” all the way through to the climatic “Wouldn’t It Make A Lovely Photograph,” the audience sat rapt at attention. It also should be noted that sound was really dialed in to reveal all the sonic nuances.

After this altogether stunning performance, the members of MMJ remained on stage and joined LaMontagne for six additional songs that drew heavily on his preceding album, Supernova. They opened with that record’s opening track “Lavender” and later closed things out with the tandem of “Airwaves” and “Superbova.”

The five musicians then left the stage before returning to offer two more songs from Supernova, the animated “She’s The One” and the haunting “Julia” before LaMontagne looked back to his debut album with a powerful, closing “All The Wild Horses.”

LaMontagne has said this is a special tour that is unlikely to happen again. Take him at his word and run out to see this show when it comes your way.
