Edited by Gil McLemore - gmclemore@mindspring.comEulogy: Day By the River
When words like 'tragedy' and 'loss' are uttered, we all find ourselves lost for a moment in the uncertainty of the news to come. Last month, as thousands of fans, friends, and loved ones grieved, these words announced the departure of both a friend and his band.
On Sunday, August 15th, the band and crew of the influential southern rock band Day By the River were involved in an automobile accident that would eventually claim the life of sound engineer Lee Laurence. Caused by severe weather conditions, the wreck also harmed several of the other band members, but thankfully with only minor injuries. In an emotional press release that came less than 2 weeks later, Craig Eubanks, head of the band's online promotions, announced via email that Day By the River would no longer perform.
With this announcement, the rollicking Athens band thousands had come to embrace ended its remarkable run. Touted as the latest, greatest of the unsigned to emerge from the south, DBR followed a simple creed: play your music, play it well, and play it often. This recipe proved a solid foundation for the band as they exceeded all expectations, emerging as one of the southland's best jambands. Evolving from simple roots, the band's members met in an Athens high school, attended the University of Miami, and formed the present -day indie phenomenon that so many reveled in. This extraordinary group continued its grass-roots approach, and garnered a dedicated and extensive fan base.
It should be duly noted that decision to end the project was made prior to the accident - but regretfully, this fact doesn't diminish the pangs of loss and sorrow that remain here in the south... Remembered as both "Sound Engineer extraordinaire and wonderful human being", Lee was not only a remarkable individual but a capable professional in his own right. And the band that we knew and loved will not fade in the memory and love of those who basked in their talent.
As always, we wish fans, friends, family, and loved ones all the best. You're in our thoughts and prayers.

Dear Friends and Family,
We would like to thank you for the outpouring of love and support we have received over the last couple of weeks. Without you, we would not have made it through this tragic period. We continue to mourn the loss of our dear friend Lee Laurence.
In this time of tragedy and sadness, we regret we must add to the loss by telling you all that Day By the River will no longer perform. Although it may seem hasty, the decision to end DBR was decided several days prior to the accident. Due to individual complications, the band could no longer continue. The fact that DBR has endured this long and reached this level of success is a tribute to you, the DBR family. Without your support and excitement, the band could not have accomplished as much as they have. Our sincerest gratitude goes out to you.
Some feel that the project has run its course and is completed. Because a few of the band members have been involved with DBR for more than 10 years, they feel it's time to move on with their lives.
The band feels very fortunate to be able to end with such success. This summer proved that we have reached an unmatchable level of enthusiasm and support. We will always treasure everyone's contributions to the DBR family. We hope this family will continue, and encourage the positivity and love that we have shared over the years.
DBR received several generous financial offers to help us get through this tragic time. While the band is in need of this relief, we felt it was necessary to inform everyone of this situation before accepting any contributions. Also know that you can make a donation to the charity of your choice in Lee's name.
You should expect a few personal emails from band members over the next few days. Feel free to email any of us personally with your thoughts, as we get through this time together. Please know that DBR loves you and hopes you understand and respect our decisions.
Love,
Day By the River
