Today we look back to August 31, 2007…
The Derek Trucks & Susan Tedeschi Soul Stew Revival Holiday Tour
The Derek Trucks Band will once again perform a New Years Eve show in Atlanta at the Fox Theatre. This year this show will feature the return of the Soul Stew Revival, which toured out west earlier this summer. The group will consist of the Derek Trucks Band along with Susan Tedeschi, Ron Holloway on sax and Duane Trucks on a second drum kit. The performance at the Fabulous Fox will be the culmination of a four date Derek Trucks & Susan Tedeschi Soul Stew Revival Holiday Tour which will begin on December 27 at Jacksonville, Floridas Florida Theatre and then travel to Boca Ratons Mizner Park Amphitheatre on the 28th and Orlandos House of Blues on the 29th. The Derek Trucks & Susan Tedeschi Soul Stew Revival will perform a one-off gig this Monday, September 3 in Snowmass Village, Colorado at Jazz Aspen.
From Wetlands Preserve to Brooklyn Bowl
As yesterday’s New York Times indicated, former Wetlands Preserve owner Peter Shapiro is in the final stages of opening a new music venue. This club will come with a twist, however, as it also will be a high-tech bowling alley. Shapiro is partnering with Charley Ryan, the former General Manager at Wetlands to create Brooklyn Bowl, which will open in the spring of next year in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn. Shapiro explains that one of the notable aspects of the 20,000 foot space is that ‘the people at the bowling lanes will have the best view of the stage. The bowler’s lounge is essentially one big VIP section.’
Shapiro goes on to explain, ‘I was patient when thinking of a new venue to follow Wetlands. I wanted to find the right thing, something that had the spirit of Wetlands but was different. I also wanted to work again with Charley, who in many ways, was the backbone of Wetlands. I am very excited about Brooklyn Bowl because it truly is going to be different than any other bowling alley or music venue. It took us five years to find the right space (an old Iron Works Factory from the 19th Century), but we found it.’
12/06/96 Aladdin Theater Las Vegas, NV
As Relix subscribers have already discovered via their CD Sampler, a new live Phish recording is slated for release this fall. 12/06/96 Aladdin Theater Las Vegas, NV captures the band’s final show on a thirty-five date tour. The version of ‘Julius’ that appears on the sampler, opens the second set of a show that is best-known for its encore. Primus’ Les Claypool and Larry LaLonde joined in for much of ‘Harpua,’ which also featured guest appearances by John McEuen and four Elvis impersonators, with Primus’ drummer Brian Mantia later stepping for the ‘Suzy Greenberg’ that followed and closed out the night.

Rhythm sections will include Jimi Hendrix Experience alums Mitch Mitchell and Billy Cox, as well as Double Trouble (Chris Layton and Tommy Shannon). The Northeast Kingdom Music Festival Film
From 2004-2006 filmmaker Chris Pepino captured the music and happenings at the Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom Music Festival. The resulting documentary offers interviews with artists and fans along with music from more than twenty of the festival’s acts during this timeframe. Bands who perform in The Northeast Kingdom Music Festival Film include: Toubab Krewe, Oteil Burbridge and the Peacemakers, Gogol Bordello, Cyro Baptista & Beat the Donkey and The Spam Allstars. Our own estimable columnist, Padre Pienbique has revealed that the original Big Wu quintet (with Jason Fladager joining in on guitar) will return for a hometown gig at Thanksgiving. The show will take place at the band’s longtime stomping grounds, Minneapolis’ The Cabooze, with details to follow. In addition to music, Miller pledges to offer ‘a FREE turkey dinner (yes, all the trimmings!) and buffet cooked by Big Wu Family Reunion Chef Monte and myself.’ On Sunday the Wu will make a rare appearance at Autism Fest in Rochester, MN.
