Tragically Hip frontman Gord Downie passed away yesterday after a battle with an aggressive form of brain cancer. He was 53.

The announcement came on the band’s website, noting that Downie passed away surrounded by his family. “Gord knew this day was coming,” the note read. “His response was to spend this precious time as he always had—making music, making memories and expressing deep gratitude to his family and friends for a life well lived.”

Downie played his final show with Tragically Hip in August 2016 in Kingston at the K-Rock Centre. The show was simulcast across the internet.

For his part, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who has expressed his Tragically Hip fandom in the past and attended the band’s final show, tweeted: “There will never be another one like you, Gord. Rest in peace my friend.”
