Tom Marshall sat in with the traditionally instrumental Phish tribute act Jazz is Phsh at Philadelphia’s World Cafe Live on Thursday. During their set, the group told the audience they needed someone to “do the trombone part of ‘Meat;” because they had no trombone that night. In a prearranged stunt, Marshall raised his hand and joined the group onstage for the tune, which appears on 1998’s The Story of the Ghost. Longtime Phish collaborator Carl Gerhard, who toured with the group as the trumpet player in the Giant Country Horns and Cosmic Country Horns, also performed as part of Jazz is Phsh throughout the night.

Marshall has featured Jazz is Phsh’s Adam Chase on his popular podcast Under the Scales before; he also recently sat in with the South Carolina Phish tribute act Runaway Gin. The Phish lyricist will take part in a signing at Huntington, NY’s Bottles and Cases this Thursday.
