Kung Fu hosted their annual Toys For Tots event at Toad’s Place in their hometown of New Haven, CT, over the weekend, as the band welcomed Pink Talking Fish and members of Turkuaz for a day of music that helped collect toys for the Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital.

Pink Talking Fish kicked off the festivities with a set of their patented Pink Floyd, Talking Heads and Phish covers, and the band welcomed Turkuaz vocalists Sammi Garett and Shira Elias for a couple tunes, Pink Floyd’s “Great Gig in the Sky” and Tom Tom Club’s “Genius of Love.”

Next up was the host band, who delivered a set of mostly their own tunes, including newer cuts like “Bottleneck” and “Svendago.” The group also brought up Garett and Elias for their final two numbers, their own “Daddy D” and a cover of The B-52s’ “Love Shack.”

The final musical installment of the evening was a collaborative set that featured all the event’s participants, 11 band members in total. The collective, dubbed Pink Talking Fu Kuaz, ran through a selection of Prince and David Bowie favorites including “1999,” “Fame,” “Kiss,” “Under Pressure,” “Let’s Dance” and “Purple Rain.” The encore, which added Turkuaz saxophonist Greg Sanderson to the mix, celebrated the holiday spirit with “Back Door Santa” and “Christmas in Hollis.”
