As the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival rapidly approaches, more and more killer lineups are emerging.

On May 3, several jam scene heavy-hitters will pay tribute to the late Col. Bruce Hampton in a late-night show at the Maple Leaf Bar.

Confirmed musicians include keyboardist John Medeski, guitarist Marcus King, Dirty Dozen Brass Band guitarist and local favorite Jake Eckert as well as sacred steel guitarist Roosevelt Collier.

Also performing will be Widepread Panic/Hard Working Americans drummer Duane Trucks and guitar prodigy Brandon “Taz” Niederauer. Trucks and Niederauer were among the last musicians taken on as students by Col. Bruce, a class that had previously included Aquarium Rescue Unit bandmates Oteil Burbridge, Jimmy Herring and Jeff Sipe.

Last year, Hampton passed away on May 1. He had been performing “Turn On Your Lovelight” as the encore of his own 70th birthday celebration at Atlanta’s Fox Theatre when he fell unconscious, and was later pronounced dead. According to a statement by Hampton’s family, when he passed away he was “surrounded by his friends, family, fans and the people he loved.”

Advanced tickets for the Maple Leaf tribute are currently sold-out, but there will be a limited number of tickets available at the door. For more information, click here.
