Near the end of their Friday night show at The Civic Theatre, The Trey Anastasio Trio briefly became a quartet with the addition of longtime T.A.B. trumpeter-vocalist Jen Hartswick. As the first night of the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, it was a welcome collaboration, and surely not the last we will see over the next two weekends in the Crescent City.

Trey Anastasio, Tony Markellis and Russ Lawton kicked off set one with the feel-good Phish tune “Blaze On” before sinking into a “Corona” followed by a “Greyhound Rising” and the first “Every Story Ends In Stone” since June 8, 2003. They ended the first half with a sing-along to TAB favorite “Alaska.”

Set two opened with The Horseshoe Curve‘s “Burlap Sack & Pumps.” The trio then dove into one of the evening’s lengthiest jams, serving up a version of Phish’s “Twist,” that segued into the exclusively live number “Simple Twist Up Dave.”

After a double dose of Phish originals to end the second set (“Farmhouse,” “Julius”), Anastasio welcomed Jen Hartswick to the stage for a duo acoustic version of “Waste.” The full band returned for the 8-Foot Fluorescent Tubes original “Mozambique.”

Finally the quartet jammed out the Gorillaz’ “Clint Eastwood,” a vehicle that has long been a way for Hartswick to display her impressive vocal chops.

Trey Anastasio Trio will return to the Civic Theater on Saturday April 28, before making their way to Atlanta to close out their Spring Tour.
