Gov’t Mule served up two stellar shows at The Capitol Theatre this weekend, giving fans four diverse sets containing old favorites and unexpected covers.

The band kicked off Friday night with a cover of The Staples Singers’ “Hammer & Nails,” followed by the 1995 tune “Rocking Horse” (which was later recorded by The Allman Brothers). Set one also offered Gov’t Mule’s first cover of Grand Funk Railroad’s “Sin’s A Good Man’s Brother” since October 2002.

Friday’s second half started with the first of three “Traveling Tune“s fans would hear over the weekend. Gov’t Mule also covered Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Effigy,” before eventually jumping into a lengthy “Broke Down On The Brazos”> “Tributary” segment that gave guitarist Warren Haynes plenty of space to improvise.

The band encored with their own “Raven Black Night” that segued into Blind Willie Johnson’s “Dark Was The Night, Cold Was The Ground.”

Saturday started off with a version of “Forsaken Savior” containing teases of “Sad & Deep As You” by Dave Mason. And before taking halftime, Gov’t mule played another interesting tease in the song “Funny Little Tragedy,” subbing in lyrics of “Message in a Bottle” by The Police.

Giving a nod to both the Dead and the Mahavishnu Orchestra, the second set offered an extended “Trane”> “Eternity’s Breath”> “St. Stephen” jam, as well as the live debut of Pearl Jam’s “Come Back.”

“Traveling Tune” returned on last time for a set-closing reprise, and the band ended their two night stint at the Cap with an “I’ll Be The One” encore, filled out with a version of The Allman Brothers’ Blue Sky.
