At the Asbury Park Music & Film Festival, Warren Haynes and Gov’t Mule were in a particularly collaborative mood. On April 29, the guitarist sat in with opening act – the Tangiers Blues Band – and later, photographer/harmonicist/festival co-founder Danny Clinch returned the favor, jumping on stage for the encore of Mule’s headlining performance along with keyboardist Peter Levin.

“I have known Warren Haynes for about 25 yrs,” Clinch wrote on Instagram. “There is nobody kinder and more humble , who then takes the stage and blows the room away. So grateful to play some music with him and Gov’t Mule, and Tangiers Blues Band was stoked when he sat in with us.”

Before the collaborative encore, Mule laid out a single set of originals and covers. They opened with the Life Before Insanity track “Bad Little Doggie,” and eventually jammed out two Beatles tunes, segueing “She Said, She Said,” into “Tomorrow Never Knows.”

Later, an extended take on original “Fallen Down” led into a jam on The Dead’s “The Other One” containing lyrics to The Rolling Stones’ “Gimmie Shelter.” Gov’t Mule then carried the teases into the closer, a “Thorazine Shuffle” with elements of Santana’s “Oye Como Va.”

Finally, Clinch and Levin arrived for a double dose of classic blues, playing Muddy Waters’ “19 Years Old” and Sonny Boy Williamson’s “Good Morning Little Schoolgirl.”
