Dark Star Orchestra’s first Red Rocks show just got even more special. In addition to recreating the Grateful Dead’s historic 7/8/78 show at the very same venue, exactly 40 years later, DSO will be joined by vocalist Donna Jean Godchaux.

“I refer to Red Rocks as the hallowed hall of Rock-n-Roll; one of the most amazing venues in the country,” the singer said in an official statement. “I loved playing there with the Grateful Dead and am looking forward to playing there with Dark Star Orchestra. It will be a blast!”

“I’ve had the privilege and the pleasure of playing guitar in Donna Jean’s band for many years, so I can attest better than most to the beauty and soulfulness of her singing and songwriting,” DSO guitarist Jeff Mattson added. “To have her back on the same stage she sang on 40 years ago will be an honor and a treasured event.”

In another tie to the original Grateful Dead family, the band’s recording engineer Betty Cantor-Jackson will be present for DSO’s July 8 performance. She is planning to document the show in her “Betty Boards” style.
