On Tuesday, May 1, Neil Young and Crazy Horse reunited for the first time since August 2014, performing a 14-song set with a single encore, and despite the historic significance of the evening, Young joked that the band hadn’t even rehearsed.

The singer-guitarist was joined by longtime Crazy Horse bassist Billy Talbot and drummer Ralph Molina, as well as guitarist Nils Lofgren, who has a particularly long, winding history with Young and the Crazy Horse outfit. On this stretch of West Coast shows, Lofgren is replacing Frank “Poncho” Sampedro, who has played with Crazy Horse regularly since 1975. The trio of Lofgren, Talbot and Molina formerly made up Young’s backing band the Santa Monica Flyers, and although he performed on the band’s 1971 self-titled album, this recent reunion tour marks Lofgren’s first multi-show outing with the full Crazy Horse lineup.

“Nothing like playing with old friends,” Lofgren wrote on Twitter preceding these Crazy Horse shows.

On May 1, the band opened with a bust out of the Crazy Horse track “Big Time” – last played in 2001 – before working their way through “Country Home,” “Don’t Cry No Tears” and a double dose of Young’s solo songs (“Winterlong” and “World On A String”). The evening’s second bustout came as the mid-set “Scattered (Let’s Think About Livin’)” which made its first live appearance since 1996.

Following solo acoustic takes on “Too Far Gone” and “Only Love Can Break Your Heart,” Young and company touched on fan favorite “Cinnamon Girl.” They closed with “Mansion on the Hill,” and encored with “Roll Another Number (For The Road),” stirring up excitement for Crazy Horse’s bright future ahead.

Neil Young and Crazy Horse will play the Warnors Theare twice more (May 2 and 3) and then perform a May 5-6 stint at The Fox Theatre in Bakersfield, Calif.
