Performing on April 27 (aka Earth Day), roots rock sextet Railroad Earth made their own holiday, dubbing their performance at Birmingham, Alabama’s Avondale Brewing Company “Railroad Earth Day.”

Following an opening set by Shannon McNally, Railroad Earth performed 20 songs over two sets, including several tunes with Magpie Salute keyboardist Matt Slocum.

The band bookended set one with a “Monkey”> “Mighty River” jam and a double dose of Slocum sit ins with “12 Wolves” and “Chasin a Rainbow.”

Slocum performed with Railroad Earth for a number of shows in 2017 when Andy Goessling was undergoing surgery, and his chemistry with the band was palpable at this April 27 performance.

The keyboardist joined the band for most of the second set, stepping in for The Black Bear Sessions track “Cold Water,” and taking the ride for “Donkey for Sale,” as well as a “Birds of America”> “Like a Buddha” jam.

After a set-closing “Elko,” Railroad Earth debuted a live version of “Angel of Montgomery” featuring Slocum on keys and McNally on lead vocals.
