As one of the headlining bands, moe. got creative at this year’s Summer Camp Music Festival.

And while mother nature was a bit testy on May 25, cutting short moe.‘s mainstage performance near the tail end of set one, they did manage to play a Pink Floyd cover – “Breathe,” last played on August 12, 2016 – and a closing “Downward Facing Dog” before a lightning storm moved in.

Later, donning animal costumes, the band treated the reassembled crowd at the festival’s Red Barn to a “meat.” sandwich. The band served up a single set bookended by their song “meat.,” and later revealed that “meat.” was the only song they had planned. All of the material jammed out in the interim – “Stranger Than Fiction,” “Tubing The River Styx,” “The Pit,” “Threw It All Away” and “Time Ed” – were chosen on the spot by each band member in rotation.

The next evening, May 26, saw moe. return to a more standard two-set format, however the jam quintet was still thinking outside the box.

Following a first half “Montego” with Mike Dillon on percussion, and a closing “Rebubula”> “Water”> “Rebubula” jam, moe. punctuated their second set with covers of Pink Floyd’s “Time” (last played 3/30/17) and the return of “Breathe” from night one; in fact, the performance marked the band’s first-ever “Breathe Reprise.” They also dove into extended jams with composed sections that, according to the band, may be fodder for new instrumental tunes. They encored with their first-ever take on Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song.”

For their final Summer Camp performance on May 27, the band opened with a nice “Seat of my Pants”> “Sensory Deprivation Band” segment, before opening things up with a set-two drum solo. The “Drums” jam bled into a version of “Brent Black” that meandered through “Bullet,” “Kyle’s Song” and “LL3,” before reemerging out of “4” and giving way to a “New York City”/“Wind It Up encore.”

moe.‘s next show is June 3 at Music On The Mothership in New Mexico. For updated tour information visit the band’s official website.
