When JJ Grey sings, “[It] made me feel stronger just to say that I’m weak,” on the Memphis-flavored soul ballad “Light A Candle,” he sums up the outlook that colors the music on Ol’ Glory. The characters in his songs all struggle with temptation before finally surrendering to their higher power. “Turn Loose” is a piano-driven dirge that follows a junkie on her downward spiral, while the folky “Tic Tac Toe” investigates someone so lost that they no longer recognize the face in the mirror. A funky sax supports Grey’s salacious vocal on “A Night to Remember” as he tries to pick up a woman who remains unimpressed by his efforts. On the flip side, swampy twang-heavy guitars give “Hold On Tight” a steamy vibe as it celebrates the passion of married sex. “Everything Is a Song” and “Every Minute” are upbeat, country hymns that celebrate the simple joys of everyday life.
