Incredible night, inspiring and very educational as a musician. Definitely something I’ll never forget. I got to play percussion and keys, and getting the rhythmic and melodic/harmonic experience of playing with Mike was just incredible, and it was great meeting everyone outside too. Perfect night all around.

I went down to Kenny’s Castaways Monday night (along with James Anderson and Matt Splain from the band Dirty Sanchez) to “The Mossery,” a free-form musical event, in the hopes of play along with Mike Gordon (of Phish) on bass. We arrived at 7:30pm, and got into the second set (which started around 10pm), which also featured Mike Gordon’s bandmates Scott Murawski (of Max Creek, and BK3, a trio led by Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann) on guitar and Todd Isler on drums. I was called up after 11pm to briefly play percussion (cowbell, woodblock, jam block and splash cymbal). I hope to jam someday with Mike and Scott on a full drum set!

It was one of the fastest 90 seconds of my life, but sitting in with Mike, Joe, and Scott was an absolute treat. I’ve played lead here and there over the years, but I’ve focused a lot more on an acoustic singer-songwriter approach for the past few… needless to say jumping in with those guys was a daunting task. That said, Scott was an incredible coach and the group as a whole had a great way of challenging you without making you look like a total fish out of water. I think the owl dug my playing, so that’s good enough for me. The whole event was something only Mike could dream up.

It was so much fun. I never thought I’d get to experience that. I was the last person to go on stage and jam with the band that night. One of the best moments of my life. I don’t play guitar as much these days as I used to, so I was pretty nervous, but the band made me feel really comfortable and welcome. I’ll never forget that experience and am still coming down from that high. Thank you Mike and see you in Utica!

Hey guys, just wanna say that the Mossery was perhaps the most incredible musical experience of my life. I had the opportunity of playing percussion on the stage with Mike and Co. and my buddy, a very talented keyboardist, was up there shredding as well. I’d be more than happy to share more about my experience with you all, so let me know.

The video is of my buddy jammin with Gordo. It gets great at around 50 seconds in. Enjoy.
