A number of individuals received checks for $13.86 this week as part of the settlement from a class action lawsuit filed against major record labels as well as retailers, including Tower Records and Musicland. Nearly $50 million dollars was sent to consumers who joined the class with more than 5 million CDs donated to libraries and schools across the country (there was plenty of $$ in attorneys fees as well). Since that check that won’t necessarily pay for a new CD, the Electronic Frontier Foundation has established a web site at www.DonateMyMusicCheck.com which contends you should donate the sums towards the organization in an effort to support its efforts to defend consumer rights, with a particular focus on peer-to-peer file sharing (then again, you can always use you check to subsisidize a fine magazine subscription).
