Jimmy Smith who certainly revolutionized the Hammond B-3 organ passed away on Tuesday at the age of 79. Smith brought the instrument into the new context, while also bridging boundaries from jazz to blues to gospel. In the late 50s and early 60s he recorded a series of albums for Blue Note and later Verve, many of which were lively jam session with other notables including Art Blakely, Lou Donaldson, Kenny Burrell and Jackie McLean. In the mid-60s he a recorded and gigged with guitarist Wes Montgomery (_Jimmy and Wes The Dynamic Duo_ is one successful offering). Smith continued to perform and was preparing to tour with Joey DeFrancesco in support of their new disc Legacy.
