New York concert promoters Rocks Off hosted the first Paul Green School of Rock Music Festival in Asbury Park, NJ over the weekend. The festivals lineup featured a mix of jam, punk and rock performances, including headliners Ween, hardcore punk/hip-hop/reggae hybrid Bad Brains, site favorites the Benevento/Russo Duo, indie-rockers Sam Champion, NYC punks Bouncing Souls, livetronica upstarts Benzos, rockers Lucero, all female MCs Northern State and guitar wizard Adrian Belew and his trio. School of Rock students also performed in a variety of ensembles, including two all-star groups which jammed with Steely Dan/Doobie Brothers guitarist Jeff Skunk Baxter on Saturday and Vernon Reid on Sunday. Covers ranged from numbers by local heroes Ween to full makeup runs through selections from KISSs catalogue.

During his set Dean Ween joked that they just played for a field full of hippies in Tennessee [at Bonnaroo] and now they are playing for a parking lot full of punks. In turn, Green gave a shout to two of the School of Rocks most famous teachers, Ween drummer bassist Claude Coleman and bassist Dave Dreiwitz. Both Friday and Saturday night, Led Zeppelin cover band Bustle In Your Hedgerow, which features the Duo, Scott Metzger and Dreiwitz also appeared at the adjacent Asbury Lanes bowling ally.
