Although Roy Haynes celebrated his 83rd birthday in March, he remains in motion. As his recent performance at the Jammys demonstrates, he is still a crisp, active drummer. What’s more, he does not shy away from current developments in pop culture, even as he maintains his commitment to traditional jazz. As such, Haynes appears in the newly-released Grand Theft Auto IV. In the game, he serves as a DJ of JNR 108.5 ‘Jazz Nation Radio,’ spinning such songs as Chet Baker’s ‘Let’s Get Lost’ and Haynes’ own ‘Snap Crackle.’ Next up for the drummer is a three night stand in Los Angeles at Catalina’s from May 29 through June 1, as he gigs in support of the 3 CD/1 DVD boxed set, A Life in Time: The Roy Haynes Story.
