According to a report in The Virginian-Pilot, Boots Riley was ordered offstage by authorities while performing with Galactic at Norfolk, VAs The Bayou Boogaloo and Cajun Festival last weekend. The article also mentions that Riley was charged with a misdemeanor by the Norfolk Police Department and that the action came less than a month after a number of downtown residents said they heard offensive language during the park’s Afr’Am Fest over Memorial Day weekend.

Karen Scherberger, executive director of the events organizers Festevents, told the newspaper that she heard an ‘embellishment of the F-word and immediately made contact with the stage manager, who motioned the singer off the stage, before the concert was shut down. She also said that it was the first time in 26 years the festivals promoters pressed charges against a performer.
A message on Festevents website said the following:

To those who attended The Bayou Boogaloo Galactic concert Saturday night, June 21, 2008 at Town Point Park, we regret that our guests were exposed to profanity used during the performance. Appropriate action was taken to end the concert immediately and the musician responsible has been charged with abusive language by the Norfolk Police Department. This type of behavior is not tolerated by Norfolk Festevents and we sincerely apologize for this incident.
Riley is scheduled to perform with Galactic at Milwaukee, WIs Summerfest this Sunday.
