For the second year in a row, Phil Lesh & Friends kicked off an extended run of shows at New York’s Nokia Theatre on Halloween. As expected, the night included numerous special covers, including The Whos Boris the Spider, Edgar Winters Frankenstein and, of course, Warren Zevons Werewolves of London. As many readers may remember, Jerry Garcia covered the Warren Zevon tune each Halloween with both the Grateful Dead and his Jerry Garcia Band. At the beginning of his second set, Lesh also read selections from Edgar Allen Poe from off the stage, while his band played a dark Halloween jam.

The festivities continued on Saturday when Ryan Adams & the Cardinals guitarist Neal Casal sat in for the majority of Leshs second set. Casal lent his country-rock talents to such classics as Hes Gone, Cassidy, New Speedway Boogie, Adams Magnolia Mountain and Sugaree. He also supplied lead vocals on a show closing version of Ship of Fools. According to reports, Adams himself was in attendance but did not play in order to rest his voice for an upcoming European tour. What? Neal played with Phil Lesh last night???
