This evening New Yorks Jazz Lincoln Center will host the world premiere of Icons Among Us: Jazz in the Present Tense. As previously reported, the four-part series features such modern jazz and avant-garde musicians as Herbie Hancock, Bill Frisell, Brian Blade, John Scofield, The Bad Plus, MMW, Soulive, Marco Benevento and Jacob Fed Jazz Odyssey. Tonights program will take place in the Allen Room at 8 PM featuring the series’ first episode, A Quiet Revolution, and a performance by Brian Blade & The Fellowship Band. Soulive and Dakah Chamber Hip-Hop Orchestra will also both mount separate tours in support of the film this spring.

I usually dont use the term jazz, but it is kind of the only way to describe the scene,’ says Eric Krasno. Jazz used to be more popular but now its a bit more underground and people have all these other influences, from hip-hop to Nirvana. But there is still this community of people like Skerik, The Duo and Soulive out there.
Icons Among Us: Jazz in the Present Tense will air on the Documentary Channel in April and May. New episodes will premier Mondays at 9 PM and repeat multiple times throughout the week.
