RatDog drummer Jay Lane is currently touring in the Northeast with his hip hop reggae roots amalgam Band of Brotherz. The group is highlighting some of its Deadbeatz material, which is built around Grateful Dead samples. As Lane explains in a current Jambands.com interview, some of this repertoire emerged when band member Zach Mose ‘came to a RatDog show and was hanging out backstage with Bob Weir and Bob was saying, ‘Iíd really like to get into this sampling and looping.’‘ On Saturday night in New York City, Weir participated in the resulting sounds, as he sat in with Band of Brotherz during the Dead Afterparty at Fillmore New York at Irving Plaza. Weir appeared on ‘Box of Sunshine’, ‘The River Song’ and ‘Hey Hey.’ Also guesting was RatDog’s Kenny Brooks, who performed with some Band of Brotherz members (including Lane and Mose) in Alphabet Soup. Tonight Band of Brotherz, who are gigging with Rob Wasserman and Gabby La La, will perform at New York City’s Blender Theater at Gramercy.
