Heatbox Joins Umphrey’s for First Avenue "Jazz Odyssey"

Umphrey’s McGee at Street Date Studios

Umphrey’s McGee performed at Minneapolis, MN’s First Avenue over the weekend. Hip hop-influenced improviser Heatbox opened the night and, at the end of the Minneapolis-based musician’s set, the members of Umphrey’s McGee slowly emerged. The group segued into a “Jazz Odyssey” jam-segment and, after Heatbox segued offstage, Umphrey’s McGee kicked off its set with “Hangover.” God Johnson saxophonist Kevin Sinclair also sat in with Umphrey’s on “Wappy Sprayberry” at First Avenue Saturday night. The group will perform at the Jam in the ‘Dam festival later this Sunday.

In other Umphrey’s McGee news, the band recently recorded some songs in New York’s Street Date Studios. Those tracks have now been posted online.

Hmmm. Sorry to let you know, but Heatbox is just one guy, not a full band. I didn’t go to this show, not a big Umphreys or God Johnson fan, but heatbox is pretty interesting.

Thanks for the update. I know he sometimes plays with bands so i thought some other musicians were onstage given the setlist on UM’s page. thanks for the info.

Heatbox is just one guy. However, he sometimes lets me jam with him. I was there and also got to jam with UM during the transition between sets. I swear, and I have pictures to prove it.
