Jerry Garcia Biopic in Motion

Earlier this week in our blog, The Loop, we shared news that actress Amy Adams will appear as Janis Joplin in a feature film about the musician. Today Variety is reporting that a Jerry Garcia film is moving forward. Amir Bar-Lev, director of the documentaries My Kid Could Paint That and The Tillman Story has signed on for the project written by Topper Lilien (whose last credited film was Dungeons & Dragons in 2000). The script is based in part on Robert Greenfield’s Dark Star an oral-history of the guitarist.

The question of course, is who should play Garcia? Why not weigh in with your thoughts in our blog.

Picture Harold Ramis the way his face has fleshed out.

there’s an article in Rolling Stone that the movie will be about Garcia pre-Grateful Dead.

Don’t forget – this film only deals with JG’s life up until the age of about 23 (before he even got chubby). This is a good sign as it would be crazy to tackle the story of the GD in a film and most people who love JG don’t know much about his early years. A young, unknown actor would be the best bet. Looks like a low-budget, unpretentious endeavor by people who have a true passion for the subject. The John Lennon film was a total bust, hopefully they can do something decent here. The underlying source material (Greenfield’s book) is great, hopefully they’ll do it justice.
