Phish returned to Noblesville, IN’s Verizon Wireless Music Center for the first of two shows last night. The outdoor venue, known to most fans as Deer Creek, has been a Phish favorite since 1995. The venue was also a cherished location for the Grateful Dead from 1989-1995.

Last night’s performance opened with a strong segment that included “Runaway Jim,” “Punch You in the Eye,” “Roggae” and a now rare “Cars Trucks Buses.” The ensemble’s second set featured several segues and jams: “Drowned” into “Gotta Jibboo” and “Bathtub Gin” “Buffalo Bill” into “Twist” and “The Horse > Silent in the Morning” and “Split Open and Melt,” into “Dog Faced Boy.”

The evening’s most notable theatrics took place during Phish’s encore. The band opened the four-song encore with a version of “Fee” that utilized a megaphone to replicate the song’s recorded vocals for the first time since the 1990s. The song segued into “The White Tape” novelty “No2” and the first take on “Kung” since 2004 (“Kung” also utilized a megaphone). The wacky encore segment ended with a cover of Jimi Hendrix’s “Fire.” Phish will return to Deer Creek tonight.
