Levon Helm and his band headlined San Francisco’s Independent Friday night. The gig was an official night show tied to the third Outside Lands festival. Partway through Helm’s set, Phil Lesh emerged to sing with the band on the Grateful Dead’s “Attics of My Life.” He remained onstage as the band ran through another Dead classic, “Tennessee Jed.” Helm sideman Larry Campbell was a fixture in the bassist’s most recent Phil Lesh & Friends. Lesh recently opened for Helm during a Midnight Ramble and joined the Band leader onstage during his headlining set.

Later Friday night, My Morning Jacket leader Jim James also sat in with Helm and his group for “It Makes No Difference” and “The Weight.” He returned at the end of the night for the encore “I Shall Be Released”. My Morning Jacket released an official version of “It Makes No Difference” on the Band tribute Endless Highway.
