At Dawn and More From My Morning Jacket

At Dawn

My Morning Jacket’s Terminal 5 run continued with a complete performance of 2001’s At Dawn last night. The band ran through the entire album in sequential order, including the rarely—if ever—played “If it Smashes Down.” Many of My Morning Jacket’s early songs faded out of rotation after the group’s December 2006 shows at San Francisco’s Fillmore so “Death Is My Sleezy Pay” (last played 2005), “Hopefully”(last played during a full band performance), X-Mas Curtain (last played 2006), “Just Because I Do” (last played 2004) and “Strangulation!” (last played 2005) were also bustouts.

Like Monday night’s performance, the members of My Morning Jacket returned for an extended encore that featured covers and B-sides the band played during the At Dawn era. The band’s covers ranged from the moody Danzig song “How The Gods Kill” to an extended jam during Black Sabbath’s “Black Sabbath.” In addition, the group segued from The Rolling Stones’ “Miss You” into an extended version of the Chocolate and Ice EP gem “Cobra” (which spiraled toward the 20-minute mark like on album). Former My Morning Jacket guitarist Johnny Quaid also emerged for a few songs, including “Phone Went West” and “Black Sabbath.”

super tight set…the first 7-8 tracks had tremendous energy…james was ultra-focused, and like the 1st night, not long-winded in between songs. just downright banging….ripp

a word about the amazing At Dawn encores. any time before I’ve heard mmj play covers, i’ve cringed, they seemed to toss them in for fun, a self-mocking change of pace between their big all-out stuff – like they were deliberately trying to sound like a really bad high school sock hop band in the gym. not this time. they were seriously playing their asses off bringing out dimensions of ‘miss you’ (i couldn’t believe they played the rolling stones!) and ‘black sabbath’ that you’d never ever otherwise dream were there. then there was bo koster’s keyboard solo to set up ‘how the gods kill’ well, it killed.& whoa! they actually played cobra…? I had actually played it for myself earlier that day b/c i was so sure it was going to fall between the cracks, only being on an ep. anyway, unbelievable. thank you, guys. i emerged onto the street in a state of bliss.
