Gov’t Mule closed out its performance on Friday night in Reno, NV with the climactic sequence from The Who’s Tommy, moving from “We’re Not Gonna Take It” into “I’m Free.” This turned out to be a harbinger of things to come, as the group offered an entire set of Who material last night at the Fox Theater in Oakland. The group opened with “Baba O’Riley” and then moved into “Bargain,” followed by “Love Ain’t For Keeping,” the first three songs of Who’s Next, the fifth release from the legendary British band. The Mule then completed the entire album, continuing through “My Wife,” The Song Is Over,” “Getting in Tune,” “Going Mobile,” “Behind Blue Eyes” and an epic set-closing “Won’t Get Fooled Again.” All of these tunes were Gov’t Mule debuts. The second set then presented more familiar material including a stirring extended run from “Trane” into Eternity’s Breath ,” a “St. Stephen Jam,” “ When Doves Cry,” “Beautifully Broken,” “When Doves Cry,” “Beautifully Broken” and then back into “Trane.”

Gov’t Mule will next perform on Tuesday in Anaheim.
