Phil Lesh joins Wilco in 1999

Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy played a pair of shows at Chicago’s Vic Theatre this weekend. The gigs benefited The Chicago Lighthouse and Near North Montessori School. Tweedy constructed his setlists around pre-show fan requests—a move that yielded some unique song choices. After honoring many of those requests, Tweedy asked fans why they chose that specific song.

During Saturday’s show, Tweedy busted out a cover of the Grateful Dead’s “Ripple.” Tweedy has performed the song with both Wilco and during his solo sets over the years. Phil Lesh even sat in with Wilco on “Ripple” at the Mountain Air Festival in 1999. In addition, on Friday night Tweedy also paid tribute to Big Star with his cover of “Thirteen.”

Both shows ended with Tweedy playing some unamplified songs at the front of the stage. Friday’s selection included “At My Window Sad And Lonely” and “Walken” while Saturday’s show featured “Someone Else’s Song” and “Acuff-Rose.”

Tweedy will perform at Winnipeg, CA’s Winnipeg Folk Festival on July 10.
