Russo and Greene at Lesh’s 70th birthday show in 2010

Both Jackie Greene and Joe Russo already had successful careers before their work with the members of the Grateful Dead introduced them to a far wider audience. Greene has been a steady member of Phil Lesh & Friends since 2007 while Russo has performed with the bassist in Furthur since 2009. Russo and Greene have also collaborated a few times at Dead-related events since early 2010.

Last night, Greene performed with his band in Russo’s home borough at Brooklyn, NY’s Brooklyn Bowl. The singer/songwriter nodded to his work with Lesh by performing both “New Speedway Boogie” and “Shakedown Street” during his first set. In addition, during his second set Greene invited out Russo for jammy versions of “Scarlet Begonias” and “Sugaree.” Greene’s first set also featured teases “Bird Song” and “That’s It For The Other One.”

Greene will perform at Woodstock, NY’s Bearsville Theater tonight while Russo and Furthur will headline Mountain View, CA’s Shoreline Amphitheatre on June 3.
