MGMT and The Flaming Lips Have "Kids"

MGMT leaders Ben Goldwasser and Andrew VanWyngarden attended the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival as fans in 2002 and 2003. At the 2003 festival, VanWyngarden even danced onstage in an animal costume with The Flaming Lips during its late night set. The Flaming Lips featured MGMT on its 2009 album Embryonic and the two bands and appeared together on the June 2010 cover of Relix.

This past weekend VanWyngarden joined The Flaming Lips onstage in a more formal setting in his hometown at Memphis’ annual Beale Street Music Festival (where MGMT also performed). Goldwasser and VanWyngarden emerged during The Flaming Lips set for a sing-along cover of their hit “Kids.” As previously reported, The Flaming Lips will play two shows this summer with Weezer and MGMT pal Yeasayer.

So that’s what people do at Flaming Lips concerts…just stand around.

Well, to be honest, that wasn’t the most rousing rendition of “Kids” I’ve heard, and I certainly wouldn’t have been doing anything but standing around either.
