For the second year in a row, Wilco helped curate the Solid Sound Festival at North Adams, MA’s Mass MoCA this past weekend. Wilco headlined the Festival on Friday and Saturday night, while Levon Helm Band closed the festival yesterday. In addition to numerous art exhibits and installations, the festival also featured Thurston Moore, Neil Finn’s Pajama Club, Syl Johnson & the Sweet Divines, the Wilco side project The Autumn Defense, Jamie Lidell, a solo set from Wilco drummer Glenn Kotche, Pillow Wand, Wilco keyboardist Mikael Jorgensen’s Pronto, Here We Go Magic, Dave Douglas & Brass Ecstasy, The Handsome Family, Liam Finn, JC Brooks & the Uptown Sound, Sic Alps, Purling Hiss and Sarah Lee Guthrie & Johnny Irion, among others.

Wilco opened its set Friday night with the first full-band take on its new single “I Might.” Later in the show, the group also debuted the new tracks “Whole Love” and “Born Alone.” The songs are expected to be on the group’s forthcoming studio album. The group’s show came to a powerful close with a version of “Red-Eyed and Blue” that bled into “I Got You (At The End of the Century).” Neil Finn also emerged to play guitar on the later part of “I Got You.”

Thematically connecting their two shows, Wilco opened its second show with the b-side to “I Might,” Nick Lowe’s “ I Love My Label” (the song has an insider reference as well, since Wilco recently started its own label). The show also included the live debuts of “Dawned One Me” and “Standing O.” Earlier in the day, Kotche also sat in with Pajama Club for “Little By Little.” Later in the set, Liam Finn—who recorded with members of Wilco on the 7 Worlds Collide project—sat in on “You Never Know.” After ending the show with another take on “Born Again,” Wilco returned for an extended encore that included “The Late Greats,” “Heavy Metal Drummer,” “Passenger Side,” “California Stars,” “Airline To Heaven,” “Monday,” “Outtasite (Outta Mind)” and “Hoodoo Voodoo.” As a treat, Sarah Lee Guthrie and Johnny Irion sang on “California Stars,” which was started by Sarah’s grandfather Woody Guthrie and completed by Wilco and Billy Bragg.

Though not scheduled to perform yesterday, all six members of Wilco emerged during Levon Helm Band’s set for “I Shall Be Released” and “The Weight.” Wilco guitarist Nels Cline also performed with his old friend, Sonic Youth guitarist Thurston Moore.
