Reports indicate that Sir Paul McCartney will perform the 2012 Summer Olympic Games opening ceremony next year in London. The Mirror reports that McCartney will headline the event, although Macca’s camp has yet to confirm the performance. The report also suggests that organizers had tried to reunite McCartney with his ex-Beatle band mate Ringo Star, however, during the time of the ceremony the drummer will be touring the US with his own band. Olympic musical headliners are often chosen to represent the host nation and with the games taking place in London next summer, there are few more obvious choices than the legendary Beatle bassist. In 2010, Neil Young—perhaps the most notable Canadian musician—performed the closing ceremony at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver.
