On Friday night, Woodstock, NY-transplant Marco Benevento returned to Manhattan for a show at New York’s 92StYTribeca. Though billed as a solo performance, halfway through his set Benevento invited out Ween bassist Dave Dreiwitz and Norah Jones drummer Andy Borger for the second portion of his set (Dreiwitz and Borger are part of Benevento’s steady trio). As the rhythm section emerged, Benevento remarked that he has now played the original “Mephisto” for 12 years with such varied projects as the Jazz Farmers, The Duo and his own trio.

For their encore, Benevento, Dreiwitz and Borger invited out the members of the Antibalas offshoot Superhuman Happiness—who opened the show—for a bit of Crosby, Stills & Nash’s “Our House” that bled into The Madness’ “Our House.” Singer/songwriter Sonya Kitchell—who attend the show as a fan—also emerged for the “Our House” medley. During the night, Benevento also confirmed from the stage that he plans to release a new single later this year.
