Huh? The Rock and Roll from The Gorge wasn’t nominated??

Huh? December 23, 2011, 15:15:46

Why the heck was a d(u)mb song nominated? just because Warren is featured? Give me that Arleen from Panic all day.

ROD December 23, 2011, 15:25:11

yeah i agree w/ kevin. this is a weak sauce list. besides how could you ever say what the jam of the year is?? also, dmb needs to get lost. THEY DONT JAM.....even if warren is with them..THEY DONT JAM.

UMPHRK December 23, 2011, 15:57:33

Well you guys are all wrong, I dont know if you ever seen a Dave show but he Jams just as much as the next band. I do agree we can not really choose a winner without listening. If I had to just vote it would be Umphrey’s.

Drew December 23, 2011, 15:57:48

I love how so many on here continue to criticize musicians, such as DMB. If you don’t like them, don’t listen to them. Why does this ‘jam band’ community just start rifling off it’s ignorance at DMB? It baffles me. I am curious though, if DMB doesn’t jam, than what do they do?

Nick December 23, 2011, 16:04:24

The ‘Cortez’ from Randall’s island was so much better then the one played at the Gorge, shame that wasn’t nominated. It’s funny, right after it was played I thought it was the ‘jam of the year’ in my book. And to those that think DMB doesn’t jam,you should check out a few versions of ‘Seek Up,’ ‘Stone,’‘Two-Step,’ or ‘Jimi Thing.’ These guys are some of the best players in the scene. While they certainly don’t wank off nightly, like most of the other acts listed often do (and I really dig a few of those bands), they have a bunch of tunes that are vehicles for jams that evolve at every show. I have to laugh when people knock such virtuoso playing,DMB is the only band that I’ve seen that is constantly improving. Wish I could say that about either Phish or the Biscuits, each peaked years ago. “Days when I remember when…”

Weak sauce is right. This list blows. A Dave fan definitely picked this one. Nick? Did you do this?

DMB....2009…70 show…67 DIFFERENT songs played Phish …2009…47 shows…482 DIFFERENT songs Your answer is all D9U)MB does id repeat songs nightly, same pre-arranged jam(if thats what u yuppies aND COPS call it)...they lost improv when ROI die..R.I.P, they stopped being decent in 1998

Chris December 24, 2011, 09:07:03

I saw DMB in 1995 1.30/95 and 1/31/95, even then, their sets were (beside 2 songs) the same each nigt at the SAME VENUE, Phish would NEVER pull that, only improv is dave in his skinny jeans skatting at the end of Jimi Thing, they jammed in 1995…and only jam when D&T do acoustic tours….otherwise same versions EVERY NIGHT , stay closer, stephan(worst bassist ever) solo>watchtower closer….every night…they have songs that are vehicles for jam but never get IN that vehicle instead Dave does AMEX commercials and is a sell out.

Chris December 24, 2011, 09:13:51

Pine Know >>>DWD>>>25 min+?
Was at SBIX, saw DMB when Phish was on break, felt like slicing my wrist when I saw Willie Nelson come out and butcher GraveDigger two nigjhts in a row at Feway…with Trey backstage, but can’t put Trey on stage nest to Timmay, he will melt his face and everyone elses, Carter carries that band. He must be tired of the same repeats as well

Nate December 24, 2011, 22:17:45

I wouldn’t even call this the UM jam of the year. There is the Bright Lights from Denver, Red Tape from Summercamp, Bridgeless from Red Rocks or the Division from Brooklyn Bowl that are all far beyond the one chosen. It was a nice mashup but not really a notable jam.

lol December 24, 2011, 22:35:52

You losers need to get a life. That DMB jam is great, probably not best of the year, but still exceptional. Have any of you even heard it? And who cares if they’re labeled as a jam band? What’s the big deal? Are they not heady enough? Can’t find any drugz at their show? Not enough crispy jams, brah? Get over it. You people sound more annoying than most DMB fans. Grow up.

Timmy December 25, 2011, 10:37:55

“jamband” is quite a subjective word for one thing. Is it referencing improvisational live music? Well, then you must be talking about jazz. If you don’t understand that, you don’t know music. Or are you referencing post-Grateful Dead “rock-jazz-phsychadelic-blues-roots-gumbo-stew.” For some reason though, Americans love to label, probably so it can be cut up, packaged and sold in the market place. Good music is good music regardless of genre or style. This specific article was referencing specific “jams” or imprvisations from certain shows. Every bands up there is super talented although not all of them (DMB and UM) appeal to me personally. Let’s just cut out the ignorance and show respect to the music, and where it comes from.

Mondoo December 25, 2011, 11:26:16

from top to bottom you guys all are d bags. A lil joke for all you trust fund “hippies” out there who ruin these wonderful shows with your trendy antics…. whats the difference between JAM and Jelly? Answer: I cant jelly my cock down all your faggot throats

timmy December 25, 2011, 12:03:35

mondoo, you must have this website confused with one of your gay s&m websites by the language you choose to engage in. Not that I’m judging your lifestyle. You know trust fund hippies can’t judge. It’s against our little booklet. But maybe you should find a new crowd that’s more suited to your closeted gay rage. You also show your intelligence level. I would rather hang around a bunch of trustafarians (d-bags and non d-bags alike) than hate filled “human” like you.

I love all theses bands and have seen them all multiple times but when it come to clean cut improve and creativeness Umphrey’s is in front by a long ways.

JD December 29, 2011, 05:42:29

i forgot to mention Um Bowl II in there home town Chicago at PARK WEST had to be one of the craziest shows of the year. consisting of a stew art session were the audience picks what they play and the whole thing is pretty much improved. not to mention….. over time was another brick in the wall/thriller and i dont mean one after another they play both songs at the same time and make them fit. so creative and so challenging

Erik December 30, 2011, 10:21:50

wow….dumbest poll ever

branderson January 2, 2012, 16:14:37

Sound Tribe, hippy techno? Haha uh never heard that label. Today 12-28 @ the Tabby!

You guys are lame as hell January 2, 2012, 18:54:33

you guys all sounds like a bunch of 4 year old girls bickering over the fact DMB sucks and Phish is amazing. That will never change.

jd January 3, 2012, 21:04:48

im not saying phish is the best band ever. im just stating facts. all the other bands on this list actually win jammys. as far as phish goes mike gordon jams at a level Stefan Lessard wishes he could play at. and for all you dmb bro haa’s there called jam “bands” not jammers. meaning the whole band throws down sick licks not just one guy sucking all the attention. who names there main band after them self anyways? that shit slides for side projects but you got to be pretty full of your self to name your main band after yourself.
