Numerous guests sat in with Kung Fu at New York’s Brooklyn Bowl last night. The performance marked the third week of the fusion group’s Monday night Bowl Sessions residency. Damn Right! opened the set and invited out Disco Biscuits guitarist Jon “The Barber” Gutwillig for “Synth 2” and “BMF.” With Gutwillig still onstage, the members of Kung Fu slowly emerged for an interlocking jam with Damn Right! Once all of Kung Fu was onstage, the band moved into “Got To Get Your Own” and “The Ventriloquist.” Lettuce/Break Science drummer Adam Deitch and Lettuce/Warren Haynes Band keyboardist Nigel Hall then joined in for “Stratus.” Gutwillig remained onstage for all three songs. Later in their set, Kung Fu brought out saxophonist Bill Evans for “Scapegoat Blues,” “Lilliputians” and “Chakrabarty” (Gutwillig also sat in on “Scapegoat Blues”). Finally, during their encore Kung Fu invited out Deitch for “Bringing Up The Rear.” With the exception of the Disco Biscutis’ rare recent shows, Gutwillig has not played guitar in public during the past few months.

Kung Fu’s Bowl Sessions will conclude next Monday. Juno WHAT? Featuring Joey porter and Dave Watts will open the night and Motet bassist Garrett Sayers will serve as one of the night’s special guests.
