Keith Richards, Iggy Pop, Tom Waits and More Contribute to Compilation of Traditional Seafaring Songs

The Hal Wilner-produced compilation Son of Rogue’s Gallery: Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs & Chanteys will be released on February 19. The album, which is executive produced by Johnny Depp and Gore Verbinski, features two discs worth of sea shanties recorded by a variety of musicians such as Tom Waits, Keith Richards, Iggy Pop, Nick Cave, Patti Smith, Dr. John, Michael Stipe, Broken Social Scene and more. Depp and Verbinski—who starred in and directed the Pirates of the Carribean films, respectively—joined Pogues singer Shane McGowan for a rendition of “Leaving of Liverpool,” the album’s first single. The song, which has also been covered by Bob Dylan, Anita Carter, the Dubliners and more, can be heard above. You can view the tracklist for the compilation below.

Son of Rogue’s Gallery: Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs & Chanteys is the follow up to Willer’s 2006 compilation of seafaring songs, Rogue’s Gallery: Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs & Chanteys. That album featured tracks by Nick Cave, John C. Reily, Bill Frisell, Robin Holcomb and more. Willner came up with the idea for the Rogue’s Gallery series while on the set of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest.
