It took the ideal event to make it happen but all signs point to a reunion of Peanut Butter and Jelly at this year’s Great Googa Mooga. It’s been nearly six years since Peanut Butter abruptly announced its departure from Jelly. At that time, shortly after the announcement of Smucker’s Uncrustables, (“a new way to seal homemade goodness into a peanut butter and jelly sandwich… without the crust!” ), Peanut Butter confirmed that the relationship had run its course and that “we all love and respect PB & J and the PB & J audience far too much to stand by and allow it to drag on beyond the point of vibrancy and health. We don’t want to become caricatures of ourselves, or worse yet, a nostalgia act.”

After going solo, Peanut Butter started out strong with Peanut Butter Toast Crunch but then both critics and fans seemed to lose enthusiasm, increasingly describing any new efforts as pablum. Most feel that Peanut Butter began its decline with PB Crave Peanut Butter Cookie Nookie Premium, and then jumped the shark with GLEE’s “Nuts about Shu” Peanut Butter-Filled Chocolate Bar. Hopes run high for the reunion, although some older fans caution that it will hard for PB & J to replicate the magic of yore given the pressures of the new artisanal revolution. One longtime food industry insider offered, “Just keep in mind here, we’re talking jelly, not jam.”
