Bob Dylan Shares "The Weight" with Jim James, Jeff Tweedy and Ryan Bingham

Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy, My Morning Jacket’s Jim James and singer/songwriter Ryan Bingham all sat in with Bob Dylan last night. The collaboration was part of the AmericanaramA tour’s stop at Salt Lake City, UT’s Usana Amphitheatre. The evening featured performances by Dylan, Bingham, Wilco and My Morning Jacket.

James, Tweedy and Bingham all emerged during Dylan’s show-closing set for a cover of The Band’s “The Weight.” Dylan has brought Tweedy and James out to cover the sing-along a few times this summer. Colin Linden once again played lead guitar with Dylan’s band last night. (He’s alternated with Charlie Sexton since guitarist Duke Robillard left the tour.)

A number of other collaborations transpired during the night. Bingham’s fiddler Robert Bowden played with Wilco on a few songs, including “Forget the Flowers” and “It’s Just That Simple.” The members of My Morning Jacket also emerged during Wilco’s show for a cover of The Beatles’ “Tomorrow Never Knows.” In addition, My Morning Jacket ran through their cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “Hungry Heart” during their slot.

AmericanaramA inches toward its final date with a performance in Irvine, CA this Saturday. The tour wraps up in Mountain View, CA on Sunday.

Dylan did not cover The Band’s song “The Weight.’ They co-recorded it (released on The Basement Tapes) originally, and the Band recorded it for their album. It is a Dylan song, however, and always has been.

Matthew, boy, do some fact-checking before you go to making categorical pronouncements. Dylan did not write “the weight,” which is one of Robbie Robertson’s many ill-fated attempts to write in Bob’s style. Other band members apparently pitched in, bless their hearts, but the result was a piece of overblown word salad and ever shall remain.

You’re both wrong. Matthew – Dylan did not write The Weight, and it was not co-recorded for the Basement Tapes. And Rcarolinian – you’re wrong because it is a great song. Word salad? Sure, but then, most of Bob’s great songs are word salad. Tambourine Man? Desolation Row? Rollin Stone?
