SCI Close Out Horning’s with Del McCoury, Ronnie McCoury, Jason Carter and Bonnie Paine

The String Cheese Incident closed out their Horning’s Hideout festival last night with some help from Del McCoury, Ronnie McCoury, Jason Carter and Bonnie Paine. The musicians joined the band for the middle portion of their first set, which was focused on their bluegrass material, as well as some covers.

The show got off to a great start with a “Little Hands” that played right into their classic “Dudley’s Kitchen.” Carter and Ronnie McCoury of the Travelin’ McCoury’s and fiddler Bonnie Paine of Elephant Revival then took the stage to help them with a cover of Johnny Russell’s “Catfish John,” as well as “MLT.” Del McCoury then joined the group for a very bluegrass take on “Cold Rain and Snow” followed by “Don’t It Make You Wanna Dance.” Next, the guests left the stage and the band played the newer Keith Moseley-penned tune “Struggling Angel,” which they dedicated to their friend Sarah Gewald, who passed away last year and for whom the song was written. The set then came to a close a few songs later with “Restless Wind.”

The second set got going with “Valley of the Jig” before the band went into “Sirens,” which featured a now-signature Jason Hann rap interlude. A stellar “Windy Mountain” then segued into an equally exciting “Piece of Mine” before “Black and White.” The set wrapped up with a jam that consisted of the newish Kyle Hollingsworth song “Can’t Wait Another Day,” a “Drums” segment and, finally, a crowd-pleasing, traditional take on “Desert Dawn” that did not include a dubstep freakout. The String Cheese Incident then played a “Jellyfish” encore, with Bill Nershi doing a bit of rapping himself at one point.

The String Cheese Incident will return to the stage at the inaugural Interlocken Festival at Oak Ridge Farm in Arrington, VA on September 5 and 6. They will be joined by Zac Brown for a special Zac Brown Incident during one of their sets on the 6th.
