Carlos Santana, Herbie Hancock and Billy Joel will will be recognized at this year’s Kennedy Center Honors in Washington, DC on December 8. Actress Shirley MacLaine and opera singer Martina Arroyo will be receiving the honors as well.

The Kennedy Center Honors recognize performing artists for their lifetime of contributions to American culture. However the recipients don’t have to be from the States. Led Zeppelin were honored at last year’s ceremony, and Paul McCartney, The Who, Elton John are also among the foreigners that have been been received the accolade. Other notable recipients of the honor include Willie Nelson, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, B.B. King, Merle Haggard, Pete Seeger, Aretha Franklin, Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder, Dave Brubeck, James Brown, Quincy Jones, just to name a few.

The Kennedy Center Honors will be broadcast on December 29 on CBS.
