String Cheese Cover The Dead, Jaco Pastorious, Lorde with Keller, Members of Flaming Lips, Los Lobos

The String Cheese Incident got some help from Wayne Coyne and Steven Drozd of The Flaming Lips, Dave Hidalgo and Steve Berlin of Los Lobos, the Tiny Universe Horns and Keller Wiliams last night at the 1stBank Center in Broomfield, CO during the second performance of their New Year’s/20th Anniversary run. The band also busted out renditions of Pee Wee Ellis’ “The Chicken” (famously covered by Jaco Pastorious) and the Grateful Dead’s “Bertha,” along with a debut cover of Lorde’s “Royals.”

The first set got going with takes on “BollyMunster,” “Sometimes a River” and “Rhum N’ Zouc before Coyne and Drozd—who had opened the night with The Flaming Lips—made an appearance for a cover of Merle Haggard’s “Okie From Muskogee.” “Song In My Head” came next before “Best Feeling” (notably absent: Keller Williams) played into “Restless Wind” to close out the set.

The String Cheese Incident returned to the stage with the Tiny Universe Horns—Karl Denson and Chris Littlefield— and Los Lobos’ Steve Berlin (on saxophone) for a set-opening rendition of “Rosie” that was followed by the band’s first “The Chicken” since October 6, 2005, which was sandwiched between “Miss Brown’s Teahouse,” as well as “Impressions.” The Tiny Universe Horns then exited, Berlin switched to the keys and Los Lobos guitarist Dave Hidalgo took the stage for SCI’s first “Bertha” since February 18, 2000. The guests then departed as the band went into a “Barstool” and “Joyful Sound” that turned into a Jason Hann/Michael Travis “EOTO Jam” before Hidalgo returned for a set-closing “Close Your Eyes.”

The show ended with a bang as longtime String Cheese Incident collaborator Keller Williams joined the group for exciting encore that featured a cover of Lorde’s recent pop hit “Royals” sandwiched between “Breathe.”

The String Cheese Incident will take a break tonight but will return to the 1stBank Center tomorrow night for the final show of their New Year’s/20th Anniversary run. They will be joined by special guests the Del McCoury Band.

Mind Blown December 30, 2013, 13:19:47

Set one was very pedestrian but good SCI. Now set 2 ,besides the flubbed two mins of Barstool, was some of the most outrageous jammed out energetic music at any show I’ve ever seen. Suwannee then this show lead me to believe this band is having fun and ready to go like 2000 again. Thank you SCI and Madhouse

Quick Change December 30, 2013, 12:23:24

Jam bands nice quick work getting off the Pink Floyd error. That was really bad.

Oh and you misspelled Broomfield.

Michael Traver December 30, 2013, 12:15:36

Better known as Michael Travis founding member of String Cheese Incident and EOTO. I think Michael Traver is his sound tech, right.
