Heavy Hitters Highlight Phish’s 30th Show at MSG

Phish returned to Madison Square Garden—their 30th appearance at the venue—last night for their third consecutive cover-free show. The band got started with a fun “Kill Devil Falls,” before an early “Bathtub Gin” really set things off. The future Wingsuit track “Wombat” was the first new tune to make an appearance, and it was followed by yet another recent creation—the Mike Gordon/ Scott Murawski penned “Yarmouth Road.” A heavy-hitting “46 Days” followed before the band toned things down so that Page McConnell could serenade us from the front of the stage on “Lawn Boy.” “Heavy Things,” “Punch You In the Eye” “Sample in a Jar” and a crowd-pleasing “Gotta Jibboo” then rounded out the set.

Phish came back out the gate for their second set with an exciting “Chalk Dust Torture” that was likely the highlight of the evening. The unfinished, nearly twenty minute tune featured a number of Type II segments, including some space-funk jams that were complimented by the occasional bass drops from Gordon. The song segued into a Mike’s Groove that unexpectedly turned into the night’s second Wingsuit track—“Devotion to a Dream.” After a brief pause, the band continued into dark, funky “Ghost” that moved into a top notch “Weekapaug Groove,” finally completing the “Mike’s Groove” combo. “Simple” was followed by a soaring “Harry Hood” and then “Cavern.” As the tune came to a close, the band faked out the audience by acting as though the set had come to a close before making a surprise jump into a “First Tube” to end it. Phish then returned to play the crowd out with a fitting “Slave to the Traffic Light.”

Phish will wrap up their New Year’s Eve run at Madison Square Garden tonight with a special three-set show.

There were no covers played on 11/2 in AC. That’s 4 shows in a row without a cover.
