Butch Trucks: "Oteil Was Offered a Gig with Another Band But Turned It Down"

Allman Brothers Band drummer and co-founder Butch Trucks has commented on the rumor that bassist Oteil Burbridge was leaving The Allman Brothers Band. As previously reported, Gregg Allman recently told Rolling Stone that the bassist decided to step away from the ABB to work with Zac Brown Band. Burbridge went on record earlier today and assured fans he is not leaving the seminal jamband.

In a statement posted to Facebook earlier today Trucks said, “Ok. Apparently there was a quote from Gregg in Rolling Stone that Oteil is no longer playing with the ABB. I have no idea where that came from but it is absolute BS. Oteil was offered a gig with another band but he turned it down. He is as much the bass player with the Allman brothers today as he has ever been. Please don’t spread this crap. Does no one any good.”

The Allman Brothers Band also confirmed their annual residency at New York’s Beacon Theatre. Burbridge—who has played bass for the ABB since 1997—recently recorded an EP with Zac Brown Band. He also stepped away from Tedeschi Trucks Band for family reasons.

oteil was great @ xmas jam what’s up with Gregg & butch ? r we in a power struggle ? bring on wanee & how bout the brothers at jazzfest?

No struggle January 1, 2014, 23:27:53

Greggnd Butch run the business side of their band with an iron fist. Taping policies and prior business decisions show that. Gregg doesn’t have to run what he says about the band he founded to anybody, but he and Butch should be coordinated. Seems like Gregg passes on a rumor he recently heard and the news pioneers at RS took it as word. I’m just happy the Ron Johnson rumor is false and Oteil is still playing those whipping post bombs. Ron holds it down for Brett fing Dennin, and was never to great in KDTU so not sure why he gets the checks he does.

Holy shit you nailed that one on the head January 2, 2014, 03:53:39

Holy shit you nailed that one on the head. Why didn’t jimmy play with Greg at Xmas jam?

Could you imagine going from playing Dreams or Whipping Post to Chicken Fried? Oteil could do that in his sleep. I guess the checks would be insane and he would have tons of time to do other thingsā€¦The ABB tour so seldomly now he has time to do lots of things, right?

He should do both January 2, 2014, 11:53:41

He should definitely try to do both for his own pocketbook. He has been well compensated for a long time by Gregg and Derek in different acts and owes them greatly. While a quick business decision to team up with Z Brown will make him more for a long time, Oteil is not going to screw over the Allmans on their 45th year. I hope he can do both, and Ron sticks with Brett Dennin.

It would be sad to think Oteil would somehow be out of both the ABB and the TTB. Good thing this is just rumors.

my sources tell me Victor Woten is stepping in.

Gregg Allman runs his mouth too much. After reading his book, I’m no longer a fan of his… (Music continues on though)

Otiel is fire! Didn’t care for ABB last time isaw them though. Zac brown is trying to break into the jamband fan base probably mainly because festival paydays are so good especially headliners. Having otiel would give him some legiitamicey in the jamband world but otiel would probably get extremely bored in this band! It’s below his skill level.

Don’t hate on the ZBB! No comparison to the ABB but a great group of musicans that play a totally different style of music. Yes they are main stream and i guess some people think thats just not cool i don’t know? There is way more to them than chicken fried! Hope Oteil has time to play with Zac, ABB, and maybe after x-mas jam another ARU reunion!!

Am I suuposed to be suprised that Gregg opened his mouth and what came out is a little short of the truth?

Oteil adds hugely to any band he’s in even when it’s not obvious. TTB, to me, lost a huge element of their sound when he stopped playing with them. Even when he’s mostly playing in the background he has a way of pushing the other players to really give their best.

Oteil probably will be leaving the Allman brothers too.
