Founding member and drummer of The Stooges Scott Asheton passed away today at the age of 64. Cause of death is currently unclear, however Asheton did suffer a stroke in 2011 that forced him to temporarily retire from touring. Asheton is survived by his wife Liz and daughter Leanna.

Along with Iggy Pop, Ron Asheton (Scott’s brother) and Dave Alexander, Scott co-founded The Stooges in 1967. While the band would undergo several lineup changes over the years, Asheton and Pop still collaborated on the singer’s solo tours and also worked with Scott Morgan, Sonny Vincent and more.

Iggy Pop took to Facebook to break the news of Asheton’s death:

My dear friend Scott Asheton passed away last night.

Scott was a great artist, I have never heard anyone play the drums with more meaning than Scott Asheton. He was like my brother. He and Ron have left a huge legacy to the world. The Asheton’s have always been and continue to be a second family to me.

My thoughts are with his sister Kathy, his wife Liz and his daughter Leanna, who was the light of his life.
