Ryan Adams treated fans to five new songs last night when he took the stage for the first time since last year’s Teenage Cancer Trust benefit at the Royal Albert Hall in London. Adams made his triumphant return at Portland, ME’s State Theater with a new band that included drummer Freddie Bokkenheuser, bassist Charlie Stavish, guitarist Mike Viola and keyboardist Daniel Clarke.

The group worked its way through live debuts of four songs from Adams’ forthcoming self-titled album—“Gimme Something Good,” “Stay With Me,” “When the Summer Ends” and “Am I Safe”—as well as the first-ever live rendition of “Change Your Mind,” a track that will appear on the singer-songwriter’s recently confirmed 1984 release. Adams also played plenty of older material, including his first “Political Scientist” since 2004.

Adams will return to the stage tonight at the Flynn Center for the Performing Arts in Burlington, VT. He will then head to the Newport Folk Festival for his headlining set on Friday evening.

Ryan Adams is set for release on September 19 via PaxAm Records, while 1984 will be available on August 19 as the second installment of his 7” series.
